DIY Project: Fabric Paint Mask

I posted earlier that we had an early company Christmas Party this year and we called it a KrisMask party. We were asked to come in masks and since then, I already knew that I wanted to make something that is inspired by Anne Hathaway’s lace mask in The Dark Knight Rises. Of course, I knew I wouldn’t be able to carry out a Catwoman costume else I’d only look like Garfield with my belly bump and everything. And so, I decided I’d still make something that looks like a lace but would go well with my maternity dress in print.

Fortunately, I came across this great blog that teaches how to do a chic mask using tulle and fabric paint and what’s even greater is that the blog also shared the mask template for it along with several other cute templates. What I like about this DIY project is that it is easy to do and it really doesn’t matter if you have shaky hands or not because once the fabric paint dries up, the mask will still look pretty!

The materials are:

  • tulle
  • fabric paint
  • tape
  • scissors
  • Cling wrap
  • a print-out of the mask template
  • about a 20-inch ribbon
  • a board or a table to stick your template into

diy-mask2So print the template and and put it on a table. In my case, I just used an old illustration board to stick my template into.

diy-mask3Next, get a Cling wrap and cover the template. Secure with tape. The reason why we need this layer of Cling wrap is so that we can peel off the mask when the paint has dried up.

The tulle gets on top of this and must also be secured in place with a tape.

Then you can start outlining the template with the fabric paint. I started with the left side first.

Finish off everything and let dry overnight. When dry, peel off the tulle from the Cling wrap.

diy-mask7Cut around the mask and the eyeholes as well. Secure the lace using the same paint or glue and let dry for about 2 hours before using.

And voila! A pretty and easy-to-make fabric paint mask that you can use for parties 🙂
