Taipa Houses Museum

In my last visit to Macau, I went to see the Taipa Houses Museum located at Avenida da Praia in Taipa. The complex features five houses built in 1921 which now display different artifacts and exhibits. The houses were last restored in 1999 to recreate the feel of the neighborhood of well-to-do Portugese families who lived in Macao around the beginning of the 20th century. The Taipa Houses Museum is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the things you should visit when you’re in Macau.

The Taipa Houses Museum is just about 5-10 minute ride from Venetian Resort Macao but the atmosphere there is very peaceful and serene, so far from the hustle and bustle of the nearby Cotai Strip. The Museum includes five ordinary green houses with Macanese architectural design. There are five houses and they’re named as the “Macanese House,” “House of the Islands,” “House of the Portugal Regions,” “Exhibition Gallery,” and “House for Reception.”

When we went there, we noticed a lot of couples doing their pre-nuptial shoots at the site 🙂

There are actually eight sites to see along Avenida de Praia. You have the five Taipa Houses, the Carmo Church and Carmo Library, and two little but beautiful gardens.

The Taipa Houses Museum is open daily except Mondays, 10AM to 6PM. Admission is MOP5 for three houses only and is free on Tuesdays.

As I said, there is another interesting church in Avenida de Praia. It’s the Paroquia Nuestra Senhora Do Carmo or simply Mt. Carmel Church. It’s a simple baroque church built in 1885 and is standing on a hill overlooking the Taipa Village. You can just walk to the Church from the five Taipa Houses.

If you plan to go to Taipa Houses Museum or the Carmel Church, you need to take one of the buses that stop in front of the Grand Lisboa Hotel. Bus nos. 11, 15, 22, 28A, 30, 33, 34, and 35 all go to Taipa Village.

Up next, my favorite topic: food adventures in Macau 🙂

I’m new to your blog and I love reading your posts. Thank you for your info for Taipa Houses Museum as this is going to be one of the places I will visit when I visit Macau for the 3rd time very soon. It’s nice to see interesting places as well other than the glitzy and overcrowded casinos.
